  REVIEW:

The movie that will make you want to be a cop - or a reporter - or, possibly, Jake Gyllenhaal . . . Zodiac.

In the 1960’s and 70’s, a serial killer was loose in the San Francisco area and called himself Zodiac.  The movie shows the true events from back then.  Inspector David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) is leading the investigation into the murders.  Paul Avery works for the San Francisco Chronicle and is reporting the events.  Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a political cartoonist working for the paper that gets completely caught up in solving the murders, so much so that he one day writes the book this movie is based on.  Zodiac randomly and brutally kills innocent victims and taunts the police by sending letters and coded messages to the newspapers from publication.  Even with all the resourced dedicated to finding the killer, to this day the mystery remains unsolved.  But, the movie does tell the audience what they believe happened.

If you have a thing for true crime stories, the Zodiac case is probably about as good as it gets.  And, if you're going to make a movie about the Zodiac killer, this is probably just about the best you could do.  Zodiac takes all the intricate details from years of investigation and masterfully weaves them into a compelling story . . . complete with several fairly brilliant, really funny, really profound moments thrown in to make it entertaining.  The movie is made complete with great acting – and even in a movie about a notorious serial killer, Robert Downey Jr. still reigns as the funniest man in film today.
But, if you don't like crime stories, you'll probably be the Zodiac’s next victim because you're going to want to kill yourself.  The movie is very graphic at times, has lots of details with which to keep track, and – perhaps because of its incredible attention to detail – Zodiac is substantially too long.

  MOVIE NIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHT:

On the Movie Night Traffic Light on a scale of GREEN meaning “Go – it’s a must see”, YELLOW meaning “Caution – it’s okay” and RED meaning “No - stop don’t do it."

We rate Zodiac YELLOW.  Caution – this one is really well done, but really too long!
